Back downstate a couple weeks later, things were really picking up steam—both with the University of Code website project and with Mae and Audrey. But despite the fact that their relationship was growing, they had agreed to keep it hidden from the employees and from June. Mae was a bit hesitant to agree to keeping it secret from her best friend, but Audrey argued that it could be seen as unprofessional and it could provoke June, as an investor, to question their motives. Reluctantly Mae agreed. She didn’t want to mess anything up. Further, Audrey promised that once the website project was complete and she took a step back, it would be more prudent then to convey a public relationship.

In the back of Mae’s mind, there was still uncertainty with Audrey leaving her too soon. And in fact, Audrey had gone back to California for a couple weeks to handle business with one of her other start-ups. She promised she would return shortly, and that they could talk on the phone as often as Mae liked, but even still Mae felt a little bit abandoned. They had just begun their relationship and already Audrey was away on business.

Still, Mae had never been happier. Her business was thriving, she felt like she was really coming into her own as a boss and leader, and she felt like she was falling in love with Audrey. All the questions and concerns were just simply her worrisome mind. Life was actually quite good.

In the conference room in the upstairs office, a room much bigger than the original one in the DCA office downstairs, Mae sat on one side of the table while Arjun and two other developers sat on the other. These developers were Harold, a rail thin pale guy with thick dark glasses, and Heather Roth, the young woman who had once volunteered at the DCA and whose mother approached Mae and Audrey at the tennis court earlier in the summer. Heather was pretty, with short dark brown hair and clear-framed plastic glasses. In fact, the entire developer side of the table was bespectacled.

“So we’re having some issues with load time and buffering,” said Arjun. He had a laptop in front of him, and he turned it so Mae could see. Clicking on a video play button, they all waited for the video to load. Eventually it did, but the wait time was annoying to all of them, tech geeks who were used to things happening immediately.

“I see that,” said Mae. “What’s the culprit?”

“It’s a database issue,” Harold added. “We’re getting stuck in a loop of functions because the database isn’t responding properly. But once the function times out, the video plays correctly.”

“Okay, so… fix it,” Mae replied with a shrug.

“We’re trying,” said Arjun. “When we make changes to the code that we think will solve the problem, it stops loading the video entirely.”

“We’re supposed to have this part finished by Friday,” said Mae. “That’s what our timeline of deliverables calls for. Is that not going to happen?”

“I don’t know,” said Arjun.
